any benefit to ssd on a backend with sata storage ?

Post by lobosolo » Thu Dec 20, 2012 7:38 am

I am going to get new WD red 3TB sata hard drive and I have an unused 80GB SSD sata drive. would there be any benefit to using the SSD as my backends drive 0 and store all the Myhbuntu files on it and just use the SATA drive for storing the shows. will there be any benefit to it or will any added ssd performace just bottle neck with the regular SATA drive.

currently i use a 320gb as my OS and a 1TB for storage.

opinions welcome !

I have setup with a headless master backend with 2 remote frontends. In my backend i have a ssd for the OS and 4 storage drives.

The ssd gives the benefit of power saving as i run the spindown daemon on my storage drives (the spin down after 30 minutes of idle time).
My storage harddrives should hopefully live longer.

Therefore when the system is idle i am only powering the m/b chip and ram and the tuner cards. in this state the chip, a dual core amd is normally
throttled to 800mhz.

When starting a playback from one of the frontends you do notice a slight delay while the required disc is spun up. No other functional issues
experienced.

Hope this useful to you.
