Re: What GUI toolkits do you favor for your Python applications?

What licensing issue is that? GPL to write freesoftware, commercial if you write commercial software, sounds fair to me! Especially considering the amount of work that goes into QT, they gotta make a living somehow and it only seems fair they make a living if you intend to do the same off their lib...

Re: What GUI toolkits do you favor for your Python applications?

Been researching which GUI toolkit to use in an upcoming project. I'm favoring wxPython(wxwidgets) because it's very cross platform. PyQt looks nice but it has the same licensing issues as Qt in general. What licensing issue is that? GPL to write freesoftware, commercial if you write commercial sof...

. It also takes control completely away from the user and in most cases it increases the amount and severity of security and reliability problems. This statement is huge. When we set ourselves up to lose that control, Linux becomes no better than many other OS's available. The 2year old nvidia buff...

The basic concept of the GPL is like this, if you take code from a GPLed program and use it in your program, your program must also be GPL, if not you are violating the GPL, like you would be violating Microsoft's Windows EULA if you sold/gave your friend a copy of it. This is where you (Not talkin...

I don't see how this is a violation - when I installed the nvidia drivers it came up with a license agreement that said this was non free and proprietary. this is what ubuntu does - the non free stuff is another repository in universe and mult-universe. they are enabled by default. here is a direct...

It's a GPL violation directly, Novell does a workaround of a loophole in the GPLv2, which is why they can get away with it, same thing with TiVo and what they do. I don't see how this is a violation - when I installed the nvidia drivers it came up with a license agreement that said this was non fre...

yea i was reading about this last night, I'm going to have to agree with the opensuse guys. I think if people wanted to leave, they would already know where to go. Even some ubuntu blogs have mentioned it was uncalled for and "just not done". This was a mail to the ubuntu dev list after the fact whi...

how long are we as a global community going to cater to the lowest common denominator? If you are honestly too stupid/ignorant to shutdown a computer, then perhaps, just perhaps, you shouldn't be using one without adult supervision. Haha! I totally agree with this! And I do not agree joel's post on...

Re: Need some advice on which OS for a web server

I'm probably going to be getting a cheap dedicated server soon and I have a choice between Debian Stable and CentOS (RHEL stripped of RedHat branding). Which do you think would be better for someone who is brand new to admining a server? Whichever you feel more comfortable with :) I'm personally mo...

The Windows Shutdown crapfest

I found this pretty interesting, it was a reply to Joel Spolsky's blog on windows vista off menu Initial Joel post: http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items/2006/11/21.html then Moishe Lettvin explains the crapfest http://www.drizzle.com/~lettvin/2006/11/windows-shutdown-crapfest.html and Joel's followup...

But as I said, I am not saying that there aren't problems that needs to be solved, so let me ask you, what should we do about the problem? People can complain all they want, but if nobody even tries to come up with some rational and constructive criticism and suggest a solution to the problem, then...

I guess, I get the idea behind Virtual Servers on one big machine, but I wonder why all of this Virtual Stuff is not going in the direction of jails under FreeBSD. That seems to be the coolest idea for servers. You can run isolated instances of different server services and web apps with unique ip ...
