N9 vs. Galaxy Nexus?

Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone has an opinion on Nokia N9 [MeeGo] versus Samsung Galaxy Nexus [Android]? I'm thinking I should get my first "smart phone" and have pretty much narrowed it down to one of those two. Android has the advantage of not being a dead platform, but MeeGo has the advantage o...

Re: HD Cache project

If by "hybrid drive" you mean one that has both flashmemory ("SSD") and spinning platters, "system memory" can't do that no matter what software you use because it's volatile and its contents are lost (nearly) as soon as the system is powered off. If on the other hand you mean a RAM cache (which nea...

Re: Putting junk back to work.

Just out of curiosity, you could try running a lightweight GUI and see how bad it is -- we used to run X-windows on 486's back in the day, although I reckon that the typical X server was much smaller at that time. But anyhow, it sounds like your machines don't have enough video/monitor to make it us...

Re: FLOSS Weekly Ogg feed

I just read this thread, sorry to repost on an old one, but it struck me that no one seemed to mention that TWiT has had an ogg feed for years: http://leoville.tv/podcasts/twit-ogg.xml -- not that it's worth listening to these days. It is a little surprising that the "mainstream" show (TWiT) has the...

Apology

I just thought I'd say that I'm sorry if I was a little too strong in my criticism of yum on the IRC last night -- I should say that for the years that I ran it, I did love Fedora (and Red Hat before it), but this one deep frustration left me a little bitter. Anyhow, there's no need for ad hominem c...

Re: Google Search 2001 The way it was January 2001

Not sure what you mean by "transfer it here", but you can see the WTC page as it was on 2001-03-01 here: http://web.archive.org/web/20010301200947/iserve.wtca.org/ The google link is interesting, but is just the _index_ as it was in January of 2001; the pages themselves are linked to the internet ar...

Interesting reading: analysis of open-source lawsuit

One of the OSI's lawyers analyzed a lawsuit that has resulted in an important precedent regarding: * Are open-source license violations contract disputes or copyright infringements? * Which portions of open-source licenses are conditions and which are covenants? I found it interesting reading: http:...

Re: Use windows at your own rrisk.

Do you have a reference on that? This is a little reminiscent of the "anti-phishing" features of some browsers which, prior to doing a DNS lookup for each host, check it against a sort of RBL of URLs, and in the process annihilate your privacy since they could track every URL you ever visit. In that...

Re: Podcasters sue each other offer theft of ideas

It's the lawyers that will spell our doom. That's ridiculous. Lawyers don't sue people, people sue people. The lawyers and American judicial system (e.g. the existence of class actions) make it possible, but behind every frivolous lawsuit is someones naked greed (which is also what's behind the cur...

Re: higher bit rate ogg file

If you decide to do a higher bit rate ogg, please continue to do the current ogg file and add an extra feed. I couldn't agree more, but would add that there is little to be gained by producing a higher-bitrate vorbis encoding at all, and much to be lost if it replaces rather than supplements the cu...

Re: Taking Linux advocacy to the "mainstream" tech press

Now I'd like to get your opinions on how we can further the cause of FLOSS in the mass media in a positive way ? First step - get the guys at LinuxCranks to stop making podcasts until they can grow up. [...] These guys are using profanity to try to express points of view. They're also all hiding be...

Re: Eee PC 901 shows up for pre-order on Amazon for $399

That's a little strange since NewEgg is pricing it at $600 (and only lists the XP version, no Linux: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220355 ). And they have it in stock. I doubt that the price difference is all MS-tax or Amazon-vs.-NewEgg -- so, while I'd be delighted if a 9...

In other words: Huge user base = more potential problems. How many orders of magnitude larger is Windows's user-base than Ubuntu's? 3, 4, 5? Are you willing to forgive MS 10,000 times more problems in a new release than Ubuntu? True enough, a larger user base equates into more people experiencing t...

I was there and definitely liked it. I spoke to some of the organizers on IRC yesterday and they were relatively happy with how it went and said that it's going to be even bigger next year.
