Re: Missed Opportunity Episode 297

I came here to talk about this segment so I'm glad to see it here. Chess asked the big question which was more or less, "Is it the main goal of this community to get as many users as possible and to do anything possible to that end?" I just wanted to muddy the waters a little bit with the idea that ...

Re: RMS participated in a IRC chat with BerkeleyTIP 5/17/2009

Very nice. I like that he learned what POS stands for(not point of sale) during the chat. Also surprised about the not going on the net with his computer part near the end...not sure what he meant by that really.

Re: Advertisments coming to Open Office

This is genius. It's already called Open Office so if you make a community-maintained and compiled version what are you going to call it? Open Open Office? CentOffice? Damn you Schwartz. I see what you did there.

A fully working VM for Hardy Host

Hello, I've tried getting VirtualBox OSE and VMWare server working on my Hardy laptop but VirtualBox(via synaptic) has a broken network adapter and the vmmon module for vmware won't compile on 2.6.24-18-generic(compains of predeclared uintptr, etc). So I'm looking for another way to run a couple vir...

Re: Taking Linux advocacy to the "mainstream" tech press

I think they mentioned it and said they'll grab an audio clip for the next show. Here's the link btw: http://twit.tv/ttg470 Listen to it. It's like the Pat and Leo show for a while. I give Leo some credit for going technical with Pat rather than trying to keep it light. Major kudos to Pat for keywor...

Re: Government Intelligence????

Much ado about nothing. These guys sensationalized a law that really only applies if you are doing forensics on computers that will be used in a legal capacity.

Re: Sincere Question...What Does Linux Offer A Computer User?

So I think we should take a more case by case approach and as you say stay away from cliches and stereotypes. Is there a specific user you have in mind? How many computer users are there...100's of millions...perhaps billions? If linux requires us to consider millions and millions of individual cas...

Re: Sincere Question...What Does Linux Offer A Computer User?

Very simply the computer user I speak of uses their computer for a variety of tasks that require the hardware and sofware to work, they use windows or osx and those operating systems allow them to complete those tasks. I'd say that describes about 98-99% of computer users in the world. Your words a...

Re: Detecting SSH tunnels

Can't find it now but isn't there a switch in some versions of ssh that sends a constant amount of data to obscure traffic analysis efforts like this? Maybe it was in sshd because I didn't see it on the openssh client on hardy.

Re: Sincere Question...What Does Linux Offer A Computer User?

I'd prefer to stay away from stereotypes, cliches and fud. With all the talk of being ready for the desktop and needing more exposure I ask...what does linux offer for a desktop/laptop user that would make them switch? What is a desktop user by your definition? I've been thinking about this questio...

Re: Microsoft to it's users, "No XP for you!" (Soup Nazi voice)

Linux and free software work fine. It just takes some time to retrain. There's something a lot cooler about Pidgin connecting to every network all in one place than some "cool" single feature in WLM. There are two types of user that are easiest to introduce Linux to. 1) Users that are geeky enough a...

Re: Microsoft to it's users, "No XP for you!" (Soup Nazi voice)

I think what makes this even better, is the fact that the vast majority of people out there, in the end don't really care, and are just gonna accept it. They might accept Vista. But they won't accept the schedule to pay more and more for the software they're using. Office used to be copied like cra...

Re: Windows fanboys retreating to Linux

On the Vista forums http://thevistaforums.com/, not only is there a Linux section. But there are a growing number of Vista users doing dual boot with Linux. Nice link. I never thought of all the Windows and Mac forums that are out there. Those would be great places to get out there and try to answe...
