Re: any benefit to ssd on a backend with sata storage ?
I have setup with a headless master backend with 2 remote frontends. In my backend i have a ssd for the OS and 4 storage drives. The ssd gives the benefit of power saving as i run the spindown daemon on my storage drives (the spin down after 30 minutes of idle time). My storage harddrives should hop...

Is mythbuntu12.04 and 0.25 now mature
I have backend and a few separate frontends.
I am still on 10.04 backend and 11.04 frontends.
So still on 0.24 mythtv.
Is there any reason why i should not update?

Blu Ray for backend
Has anybody fiited a Blu Rray drive to their dedicated Backend. How did it work out? 0.25 is supposed to fully support Blu Ray straight from disk. So if i had a Blu Ray drive in my backend could i watch it on either of my fronends? Could this be a better option than a stand alone player which would ...

Re: Mythbuntu 12.04LTS lirc frustration
Do you have a particular IR remote you plan to use? if you are not yet commited to going down the IR route you could go bluetooth. I have had a very good experience with using the SONY PS3 DVD remotes in conjuction with belkin dongles. Regards setup I have used the uinput kernel module method of con...

UK free to air satellite channels
On the latest pod cast the free to air UK satellite channels were mentioned, see link for further details. http://www.lyngsat.com/Eutelsat-28A-and-Astra-1N-2A-2B.html UK cable (virgin media ) could technically be received using mythtv but in doing so you would be in breach of the terms and condition...

zotac zbox hd id11 frontend
Found one of these bare-bones mini pc's on sale new for £120, lowest i had seen previously was around £180 So with the addition of a Kingston s100 ssd and 2gb of ddr2, i had a complete frontend for the living room for £180. Works really well and is inaudible from from the sofa, much better than the ...

NAS distro
Not directly Mythtv related but potentially useful. I recently set up a redundant machine as a NAS. I initially tried using FreeNAS, but due to hardware incompatibles had to abandon it. I was unsure what to use instead, then i found OpenMediaVault. http://www.openmediavault.org/ This is a Debian bas...

Re: Backend update
Following on from my earlier post, one thing i can potentially do following the install of the 11.04 64 bit to the ssd is spin down my storage drives I currently have 3 storage drives 2 off 2 TB and a 1 TB. With the drives spun down while not in use and the OS on an ssd i would expect a lot less hea...

Backend update
Its been six months since i made any changes to my mythtv back-end. I am now looking to do a fresh 11.04 64 bit back-end only install to a new ssd drive. I will not set up a swap but plan to run 8gb of ram I am intending to add a further 2 tb of storage soon, also. Current back-end started out as a ...

Backend Frontend split
I thought i would share my recent experiences of building a second remote front end and making the original FE/BE a BE only. It has come about as a result of making the mistake earlier in the year of buying a cheap motherboard. This was intended to up grade the Linux machine i am using to type this ...

storage group options
On my backend/frontend system i have 4 tb of storage. The 2tb recordings drive is now 85% full, usage of the pair of 1tb drives is fairly light. So my idea was can storage groups be set up on the 1 tb drives to provide extra storage for particular recordings. Could i setup a group say for films(ota)...

Re: The problem with Linux and MythTV (bait line)
I do know what you mean about looking through recordings to see what you can delete. Before recently getting my 2TB drive for recordings i was using the myth native archive option to move some recording to the videos drive to make space. I see 3TB drives are now available, so increasing storage in t...

Re: The problem with Linux and MythTV (bait line)
Yet another round of hardware changes have meant restarts were needed recently. I turned off my combined FE/BE yesterday evening after 9 days continuous trouble free running as there was nothing i wanted to record or jobs waiting. As i have mentioned before i am in the UK and I am now running a pair...

Re: Recent Changes
If you want a minimum risk option why not get a spare hard drive to put a new install on. I do not know how you have your set-up configured, but if you have OS and storage on separate drives you could keep you current / drive as a fall-back option. Your data base could be restored from backup on to ...

Re: Recent Changes
No problem marc if you want some more detail. I should mention that now the 0.24 ppa repositories are selected i am continuing to get fixes updates. My initial 0.24 fixes was 105 since then i have had 108, 112 and i am now on 116. None of these changes have caused any problems. I have this week been...
