I just bought a cheap Canon LiDE 25 that seems to go for around $50 that works literally straight out of the box, no config files to edit or anything. As with most scanners, the panel buttons don't work but it seems to work well for the price overall for me

I agree on Automatix being rather unneeded for about 95% (at least) of the things that it offers. You have to edit your sources.list to install the script anyway, so why not add all the proper repos instead? I think the automatix guys should just set up a special repository with all the p2p apps etc...
