Speaking of GNOME, mrben, as a GNOME user, what do you think of SLED? (If you havn't tried it, what do you think of the looks of it?) I've not tried it - I've looked at a few screenies. I have mixed feelings - on the one hand I think that Novell are doing a lot of good work, and SuSE was always a g...

If you read my original reply again you'll notice that I say that non-Free drivers sounds like a GPL violation, not non-Free software in general. Ah - sorry. Misread. My mistake. I would be interested to see if they've actually gone ahead and done it, or whether it was a stated aim that was quashed...

I am aware of this, but if it isn't a GPL violation, then tell me why both Novell and Kororaa received angry letters from kernel developers when they included non-Free drivers? Ah - herein lies the key - it's about drivers, which are linked into the kernel, rather than codecs, which aren't. Includi...

Hmmmm, non-Free drivers included in a distro out of the box, smells like a GPL violation to me, because this is exactly what Novell got a nice letter in the mail for doing. Why is it a GPL violation? Boxed distributions have been supplying non-Free software for years out of the box - the old SuSE b...

It's a bit late to post them over - you buy them, and I'll pay you the cash when you get here ;)

LugRadio Live!

Ok - this is mostly a shamless pimp, but just in case any of your listeners isn't already aware of LugRadio Live, then it's this weekend (22nd/23rd July), so if they're passing Wolverhampton (UK) they should really pop in, as it is _the_ open source event of the year in the UK.

Minix was the teaching OS that Andrew Tannenbaum created, and on which Linus began to build Linux. IIRC Linux originally used the Minix file system before ext2 came along. It was also partly from frustrations with the limitations of Minix that Linus created Linux.

I wonder whether the Red Flag people will have any say in this matter.....

I think that the excellent ThinkWiki.org will continue, and I doubt there will (at least initially) be any serious changes in the hardware. Hopefully it won't be too big an issue, more of a molehill than a mountain....

I've been running Dapper on my laptop and my desktop without any major hiccoughs for a while now, although I run the 'vanilla' Ubuntu, rather than Kubuntu, so I cannot comment on the quality of upgrade there. Oh, and the new upgrade manager app (http://daniel.holba.ch/blog/?p=14) looks like it could...

FWIW you _can_ install packages from Debian on an Ubuntu system - the multiverse repository is essentially the rest of the Debian unstable repo (including non-free, and stuff like that). Ubuntu is firmly committed to syncing with Debian Unstable on a regular basis, so that all changes are sent back ...

Yeah - all the latest TPs come with both. Personally, I prefer the nipple, and have the touchpad disabled on my T41. ThinkWiki is also a great resource.

If you can afford it, then I would definitely recommend Thinkpads for running Linux.

Chances are that Ubuntu has better support for ACPI, and thus the power management features of your laptop.

Even if this is true, distros are not the only provider of this fancy admin gui toolkits. KDE for example has a UI to configure SAMBA and there was always LinuxConf as a distro-less admin tool and also webmin. Yup - I already said that: Plus, KDE and GNOME have started shipping with more and more a...
