Hey guys,
I am currently listening to ep3 and at the beginning there was a discussion on if there was a benefit to running RAID when recording multiple streams. I won't comment on the RAID but within MythTV if you allocate multiple drives in the same "Storage group" then MythTV auto switches what it records to those drives when recording multiple streams.

I noticed one day that I was recording three streams and one of my frontends was streaming another show all on one drive. My resources were going through the roof! I added two extra drives into the storage pool so now when I have all my tuners running, they are all streaming to different drives. This really is a much better alternative in my opinion and worth researching.

The one thing to note is that if you fill a drive, Myth deletes the old recordings even if you have plenty of space on the other drives. So my primary drive fills up faster then my secondary which fills faster then the last (it isn't often I have overlapping recordings).

I didn't quite understand the part where you guys were talking about XMLTV. I have the same situation with Comcast and their HD channels not being identified with a normal scan. How do you find the channel ID numbers for these stations? I know how to manually input this info using Mythweb. Can you please provide some more info?

While I agree that raid is probably overkill I wouldn't be so quick to disregard software raid. My experience shows that software raid is not as processor intensive as you make out and I have experience where badly written hardware raid drivers actually produced a lot slower performance across the board. Even where there are good drivers available this benchmark shows that there are a lot more factors to consider than just hard v software and it is not always clear which will win out in every situation. http://www.linux.com/news/hardware/serv ... tware-raid

One major disadvantage of hardware raid is that you can't simply swap raid controllers and hope to have your data back. I've seen situations where replacing the RAID controller with the exact same model didn't bring back up the array as the firmware was different. With software raid you can pop in any System Rescue CD and have the raid tools available to you regardless of the underlying controllers.
