Karmic Beta/MythTV NFS server problem

Hello All,

Yesterday I installed the Karmic Beta on my secondary backend. I installed the Ubuntu desktop and then added MythTV through Synaptic. All went well until I installed the nfs-kernel-server. During the install it just hung with the message "starting server" (not exact message). After hanging with this message for a few minutes it then displayed some error message.

Just thought I would let anyone else know about this who uses MythTV and NFS shares.

Anyone else have success with Myth and Karmic Beta?

I've held off because MythTV 0.22 isn't official yet. They're getting real close. The Myth bugtracker for 0.22 is under 50 open bugs. Maybe another week? Just remember if you have multiple boxes you'll need to upgrade all of them. The databases aren't compatible between releases of Myth.

Glad you mentioned the database incompatibility issue. I think I'll wait for the official release before I give it another try.

Pat,

Do you know if the .21 database can be imported into .22 or will we have to start over from scratch? Not a big deal but it would be nice.

TIA

I'm pretty sure it will get picked and moved when doing the upgrade. Might be a good to do a database backup prior to upgrading. If it's a complete mess you'll be able to do a database restore on a clean install.

This morning I was able to install NFS server while booted into a live-cd session of Karmic Beta. Must have been something funky with my test install. Over at the AVS Forums someone suggested using SSHFS instead of NFS. Anyone have any pro's or con's for NFS versus SSHFS on a local netwok?

I currently use NFS. The performance has been very good. I tried Samba for a bit but just kept using NFS. Haven't tried SSHFS. I would imagine there would be a bit of overhead with the encryption. For streaming media in a home network encrypting everything seems like a bit of overkill. Unless you're hosting questionable/illegal media :)
