Backup options

Hi
I have been planning a new build for a Mythtv frontend /backend system for some time. I have now got together a case, motherboard , dual core chip , a pair of 1TB drives and a GT220 card for VDPAU.
What was holding me back was the issue of retaining some old recordings from previous 0.21 builds with smaller drives. Both these earlier systems had problems with booting or starting the backend server.
However after some research i have managed to get both systems running.
Given that i now had these systems running what i discovered was that you can export in native format not just to a DVD but to a external hard drive. This for me was the perfect solution as i was now able
to back up some old recordings from a SUSE based system for later import into the video partision i will set up on the new 0.23 mythbuntu 10.04 build. This process does not recode anything and as a result
i was able to create a 100mb backup in about an hour and a half.
Some people may prefer to make a backup of an existing database and restore this on an upgraded system. However given the step change of software and a change of distro and the age of the old
recordings this is ideal for me.
Hope this useful to somebody.
I will let you all know how the build goes in due course. I will also sorting out a much upgraded remote front end.
Shame about Dan and Pats issues getting episode 20 done. Good they got the show out in the end.
