In the end, it's still a mystery.

The problem is over but as to what exactly caused it is still a mystery.
Before I could not run two HD-PVRs together.
Eventually, I felt it best to leave it alone for a while after beating my head into the wall.

One month later....
1.) Borrowed an XP (windows) laptop from my mom to update the firmware on both HD-PVR boxes.

2.) Installed a spare USB backplane connector to an unused USB 2.0 bus header on the motherboard.

3.) Several Linux Kernal upgrades and general updates later.

4.) Connected the HD-PVRs to separate usb buses on the motherboard.

Now it works. Hallelujah. It works flawlessly. I now resumed using the firewire ports for channel changing on the cable boxes. All is well. However, I'm not sure which of the actions solved the problem. I'm thinking that updating the firmware to the boxes is what did the trick. What say you?

Marc.
