Edgy Eft

Edgy has treated me pretty well after the upgrade. I have AIGLX and Compiz running on my nVidia card, and it's been stable for the last few days. With Dapper, I couldn't get Deskbar to work with Compiz on, so I went right back to Metacity. So far I haven't found much that doesn't work; movies are playing well, the effects look good, and I'm quickly getting used to the smoothness of it all. I have to say that I love the transition effects.
I'll probably stick with Gnome until KDE4 comes out with their first minor point release. If KDE4 turns out as well as I believe it will, Gnome might become my red-headed stepchild DE.

Vim is beautiful
Yeah, I have to admit that edgy is very nice - I've been dicking with it over the weekend, and the amount of stuff that is working OOTB, and working well is amazing. I think it'll be a major improvement for my wife. One thing that's bugging me is that none of the powersaving stuff is showing up in kcontrol (or even their own system menu). Klaptopdaemon and kmilo are running and pre-configured, but kmilo is not working correctly (and I'd like to turn it off in favor of tpbd) and I can't refine my powersave profiles. I also can't set klaptopdaemon hotkeys, and many of the thinkpad buttons aren't working, or aren't working correctly.
However, for the first time ever my canon ip4000 worked with just a little configuration - essentially adding the printer, and telling it to load from the tray instead of the form-feed slot.. This is a HUGE improvement - there's now way in hell an average user can be expected to download rpms, run aliens on them, install debs and then hack a few config files/make a few symbolic links. I've done it, and it's a pita. This time, all I had to do was choose tcp printer, and it was a choice right under canon. Full marks for this.
The radeon driver works well enough for me on this x300 - ppracer and mania_drive both look great. I'll see what the fglrx driver does, but considering how little gaming I do on my lappy, I can't see a need for it unless I decide I need to do the compiz/beryl thing for some reason.

Upgrade problems or problems with the version itself? What kind of problems?no1important wrote:After reading about some of the problems people are having with Edgy at the Kubuntu forums, I am in no rush to upgrade, I have everything set up good now and maybe when I have some free time I will upgrade.

Yeah. Other than the usual *buntu "NO, you are DAMN WELL doing it MY WAY!" issues I always run into, I haven't had any problems with it at all. I think it is probably a waste of time doing an upgrade though - there's basically nothing special about the install on my wife's lappy, and everything she needs is in her home partition.

I did a clean install of Edgy on my wife's lappy last weekend rather than an upgrade - it was amazingly easy since she really doesn't do much besides rdesktop, browser and chat. Took about half an hour to install, and another half an hour to get tings working just so - I probably have one more half an hour to work out a few kinks she found this week.
I've actually got arch on my lappy at this point, but am considering switching back to edgy. It took about 20 hours to get my lappy where I wanted it for basic tasks, mostly because I had no idea what I was doing half the time, and at least another 10 to get all the bits and pieces I missed. I am still finding that I don't have software I would have expected to have at very bad times, so I imagine I'll end up spending another hour or two this weekend tweaking things. Most of my problems are because of my own stupidity, but I'm discovering that having things "just work" and having apps you'd expect to (telnet for one) on a lappy, especially a lappy you use for work, is pretty damn important. Ah well, I've got time to think about it.
