Pretty big news:
http://www.cnr.com/press.html
They say they will offer a legal DVD player and multimedia codecs package. So does this become THE place to buy commercial/proprietary apps for Linux?

That's good news. I don't see the average Gentoo user using something like CNR for software installation, but it would be nice to have legal DVD playback, for sure.Tsuroerusu wrote:They say more distros will be added in 2008.Wally Balljacker wrote:I guess all of us Gentoo, Slackware, and Arch users are SOL.
Now, this only makes playing DVDs legal, right? Ripping, I would assume, is still considered a violation of the DMCA through circumvention of the DVD's encryption. Given that DVDs don't have as long a shelf life as we were told, being able to backup DVD's to disk and DVD-Rs is essential to me. Not to mention it just makes sense that many of us would like to have something like a monster MythTV box that holds all our DVDs, CDs and TV shows on one box.

The DMCA forbids ANY sort of circumvention of digital restrictions management and other types of copy protection. So ripping DVDs is absolutely illegal in the US, and even in a lot of European countries.Vogateer wrote:Now, this only makes playing DVDs legal, right? In addition to that, the DMCA also forbids people to reverse engineer copy protection schemes.
