I leave my connection open for compatibility (the DS doesn't support WPA, although I really haven't used my DS online in a while...), ease of setup, and because my house is a half mile from any other, they would have to be sitting in the drive way to steal my wifi and if they need it that bad they can use it. I only get a 25% signal on my desktop so they would get less then 10% anyways.

If I were in the city I probably would use WPA but right now it is not a concern for me.

As far as security is concerned it is possible that you could get hacked into using the wifi connection but if you set it up right it shouldn't be a problem.

Also my connection will drop on occasion but that seems to only happen when I have bittorrent seeding a bunch of torrents.

It depends what equipment the crackers are using :P
At Defcon they had a competition for furthest distance a wifi network could broadcast and it really was miles. Admitadly your not broadcasting with a sattalite to the world.
But i recall linc saying on one of the shows how his nokia n800 could pick up wifi access points he did not know existed because his laptop did not know them. I guess its possible to add a really powerfull antenna to a wireless card and pick up a wifi connection at a fair distantace.
