Flash, the enigma ..

Post by Judah » Mon May 14, 2007 7:06 pm

Ok, let me preface by saying, I was running an old version of SuSE (8.2) and
had flash 7 installed, running on a 1.7mhz celeron with 256 megs of ram.
Back then, I could watch all my favorite podcasts WITHOUT it going out of sync
and it was very smooth. I was a happy camper. I could watch DL.TV and
Cranky Geeks with no problems. Then they decided to switch over to flash 9,
which forced me to upgrade and now, everything is lame. It's like watching a
bad slide show with audio. No smoothness at all. Does this mean I have
to upgrade my computers hardware?? Is it because of how the shows are
encoded?? Another thing I don't understand, is if I let it d/l completely,
shouldn't it run smoother since it's not streamed?! It doesn't..

When I was running flash 7, It was also on a dual-boot system with an old
version of win 98. Ironically, the win 98 flash WOULD get out of sync and
be slow..

IS anyone else having problems with Flash 9 in your browser ?? Slowness,
out of syncness, etc? If not, could you please post your hardware stats
so I can compare? thanks..

That's weird, because one of the biggest issues with Flash 7 was audio/video sync issues on Linux. I haven't had any issues since upgrading to version 9 on my 1.73 GHz P-M, and 1.8 GHz P4 machines.

Your system should be more than adequate for playing Flash videos. Maybe try booting up a live CD.

Another option would be to download the UnPlug Firefox add-on, and download the .flv video to your disk, and watch it with MPlayer. Works on all platforms.

Yeah, I agree with Wally - that's pretty much the opposite of my experience. 7 was crash prone, would get out of sync within seconds, and hogged resources. 9 - even the early beta - was slimmer, had fewer sync issues, and didn't crash much. The full blown 9 is just as good on my linux box as it is on my windows work machine. But, keep in mind suse 8.2 is *very* old, so it's almost certain you're exposing flaws I'd never see. I recently threw out an 8.2 box set, come to think of it :)
