I sincerely doubt that folks whom have set up their first server didn't have to tinker. I was just asking for ideas of things to serve. I have gotten some ideas. Some very good ideas. I have done VMware. That is great and i would recommend that to everyone. Now I want to step ahead.

I live in extreme southern Texas and there is no lug, or user group within 350 miles of me. I am self taught and I have been using linux as my sole desktop for over five years, off and on before that. Since I don't have access to a group I am trying to use this community as my user group. If this is the wrong thing to do please advise me and I will look elsewhere.

I hope I don't seem to harsh, I don't mean to be. I really do appreciate the suggestions and am grateful for them. This just seemed a little condescending to me.

Sorry if you took my post the wrong way.

When I read your original post and follow up I was looking at it as you have a server that is serving music right now. And you want to learn to do more. I don't associate tinkering and a working server in one thought as a project. Thus my suggestion of using a VM to create a baseline server image to build your test projects on. Once it's working there, move it to your 'production' machine.

As far as suggestions of projects to do, what is it that you need done? That's pretty much the best place to start. If you ask me right now for a specific app, I'd suggest Asterisk or some other VoIP project as that is what I'm about to embark on. Yet you may not want to go that direction and as Dann suggested a calendar project would be up your alley at the moment.

As for a LUG in your area, do you have a library or other community center? Many times you can post flyers for general interest types of things. Put one up that you're holding a Linux users group meeting in two weeks and see who shows up. The absolute worst that will happen is that you sit alone in a room playing on your laptop/reading a book waiting for people to show up.

And as long as you don't mind some of the hosts of the board insulting you when you post feel free to use this board as a user group.

Has anyone tried oscommerce or sleekoffice. I found that word perfect has a web based office system, but it looks like it is windoze only.
