Distro Selection Tool

Post by Patrick » Tue Aug 30, 2005 6:10 am

Check out to see if it's right:
http://eedok.voidofmind.com/linux/chooser.html

I scored 91% for Debian. 81% for Gentoo and 72% for Slackware. Not totally accurate but pretty close :)

And there's this one:

Which also picked Debian and Kubuntu for me.

Both pick Fedora as my first choice, which is correct. I've used the second one before and found it to be pretty good.

Debian, kubuntu, fedora. More or less accurate - I'd really like a fedora or kubuntu that didn't more or less force you to upgrade every 6 months or so. I'm tired of constantly upgrading my OS and dealing with the breakage that is inevitable.

Both tests chose Gentoo Linux as the number one distro choice and that is correct for me. The second test chose Slackware as the second choice and there were three distros that tied for second place on the first test: Arch, Debian, and LFS. I think that both tests are fairly accurate and reflect my preferences well.

You don't have to upgrade Fedora if you don't want to. I personally run the test releases on a separate partition or machine, but when a new release happens I don't upgrade right away. I give it 2 or 3 weeks to see what problems other people have, then I'll do a fresh install in another partition and start using that. When it gets to the point I think it's solid, I'll switch permanently and use the old root partition for something else.

I have a separate /home partition, so it's pretty easy to switch back and forth. It's possible to wait to EOL on a Fedora release and still have good regular updates. Some people just upgrade every other release. You could also consider Centos or White Box Linux, which are RHEL clones.
