Firefox 3 beta 2 Passes Acid 2

Well, I am glad for this. I saw the posting on Lxer about Firefox 3 beta 2 and read the mozillazine article: http://www.mozillazine.org/talkback.html?article=22782

In the comments I noticed that someone said it did not pass Acid 2 even though beta 1 had. A response said there was an error with the image retrieval on the page and it does pass Acid 2, the problem was not with the browser. So I just had to see for myself.

I downloaded and fired up Beta 3 under Gutsy. I really like the direction they are going. While there are not any serious changes, it seems a bit slicker, polished. It did pass the Acid 2 test.

Two things of content though. First, most of my extensions did not work; which is to be expected at this stage. Seocond, the history drop down is messed up. The fonts are all whacky. Still; great stuff.

The thing I would like to see in Firefox, especially for the version for GNU/Linux and UNIX, is improvements in terms of performance and the general speediness and snappiness of the application. When I fire up Firefox it takes like 5 seconds to start, and then after that it just generally feel like a heavy, and sluggish browser. When I have 15 tabs open it takes like half a second to switch tabs. I have tried having 30 tabs open in Konqueror and it switches instantly. I honestly would like to know why Firefox feels this slow.

Even the GNOME developers seem to be looking for alternative options for Epiphany, I noticed them being interested in WebKit (Apple's KHTML fork) lately.

That's not 100% true, firefox is not that fast as you may think on windows.
Internet explorer or opera runs like a bat out of hell in comparison.

OK, I'll agree with that, but on Windows it still doesn't feel NEARLY as sluggish as it does on GNU/Linux, FreeBSD or OpenBSD (Which are the UNIX-like platforms that I have tried it on).

I can't wait to see Konqueror on Windows, it will be interesting to see how it runs, especially once the initial maturity issues have been squashed.
