I installed the kubuntu beta last weekend and was underwhelmed to say the least. Specifically, the new way they're dealing with xorg appears to suck. On both a bare-metal install and a virtualbox install the installer decided I had a 800x600 screen, and the kcontrol options refused to offer me anything else, and refused to let me use the nvidia driver (which I had installed). It would let me choose the nv driver (for some reason it had defaulted to vesa in both cases) but when I applied the changes, nothing changed. Usually this isn't an issue for me at all - I almost always config xorg by hand. Well, for some reason, xorg.conf is more or less a vestigial file on the *buntus now, and apparently this is on purpose. I haven't had a chance to dick with it any more so far, but first impressions are a bitch...

I have had some fun with ubuntu HH server. It does have some important gliches that i hope will be fixed eventually.

I have gone against a long standing policy. In the past I have waited at least a week before upgrading my kubuntu. I am using the 64bit version and have a lenovo laptop that is pretty much a intel box. I upgraded to 64b Hardy Heron. Hardy beta works better for me that gutsy ever did, and this is still beta. Things that didn't work under gutsy now just work. For me this is one of the best versions of U/Kubuntu yet.

I am using the 64bit version and have a lenovo laptop that is pretty much a intel box. I upgraded to 64b Hardy Heron. Hardy beta works better for me that gutsy ever did, and this is still beta. Things that didn't work under gutsy now just work.

Can you give us specifics of what now works?

Well flash in FF worked immediatly after the upgrade. I did remove FF3 and put FF2 back. My web cam was found and worked. It had worked under fiesty but quit with gutsy and I could not get it to work. Ekiga works. All my digital cameras were identified and pictures automatically downloaded with digikam. Before I had to remove the SD card and plug it in to get my pictures. Power management worked flawlessly. USB works in non-free VirtualBox. I have seen a thread that says the fingerprint reader is able to work with a little effort. Have not tried that. I am not using CompizFusion or KDE4. This install is pretty new so I may find other issues.

I still have not made work is java plugin in FF. My synaptics touch pad still has problems.

All in all I am very pleased with this version.

The easiest way to get java work inside a 64 bit browser is too install konquror because it just uses the java binary and embeds it into the browser, no need for a separate plugin. Sure konqeuror is going stick out like a sore thumb in gnome , but its the only 100% guarantee that java will "just work" for the web. Its never failed me.
