Sound quality . . .

Post by Crimguy » Thu Sep 29, 2005 9:49 am

Like the show - I download it religiously. However, the sound leveling (or lack thereof) makes it very difficult to listen to, particularly when I'm driving. If it's possible, please make more efforts to get your soundcheck right, have your guests 'not' fidget with their mics/headsets, and perhaps test your guests equipment beforehand by having a conversation ahead of time. If they have lousy mics, perhaps they can borrow something a bit better?

Thx!
Matt

Thanks for listening!

Not to make excuses but:
We do a sound check before the show and adjust the levels the best we can. Most of the time we actually do talk to the guests before the show starts and adjust everything the best we can. The compressor Allan bought has definitely helped the quality of the audio but it's still not perfect. Unfortunately we can't control our guests who are fidgeting or suddenly talk low or loud. Also we can't control what hardware our guests use. Sometimes they're on a phone halfway around the world. Another thing to consider is we're pushing the limitations of our current bandwidth.
Besides streaming the audio live:
we're encoding in mp3 & ogg on the fly
running Asterisk
running the IRC chatroom
running our LUG website
running the LUG mailing lists
running mail services for a bunch of the LUG people

We're trying to do the best we can on a non-existant budget. The show is growing every month. We'll be announcing donation options for you guys to help us improve the show. More bandwidth, better equipment, etc...

Trust us, we want to make the show the best F/OSS show on the web. Better guests, better interviews, best technical content and most of all BEST AUDIO QUALITY!
