Some news regarding Kanotix, KDE, and Debian SID
To my fellow Kanotix users, I just thought I'd post some news I've been following on the Kanotix forums.
Thread: KDE and Sid Unstable.
For the time being, Kanotix users are treading lightly in reference to system upgrades (dist-upgrade). Until Debian SID has been updated with all of the appropriate packages for KDE 3.4.2 you should be careful as to what apt wants to update on you.
The libraries and files, according to the thread, should be back in sync. soon. Just be aware of the issues in order to keep your system running smoothly.

Speaking of Kanotix, a new version should be coming out pretty soon. My assumption of upgrading would be a simple dist-upgrade, kernel and script upgrades. Upgrading the kernel is really easy under Kanotix. My only worry is how stable KDE is under the Debian unstable branch. I've been meaning to try a light desktop such as icewm, XFCE or fluxbox under Kanotix. I want to see if the fluxbox slowdowns Dan was experiencing still exist. I know he was using an old version of Kanotix he got from a magazine. Ubuntu is coming out with a new release next month and of course a new release of Slackware was just released.
Thanks for the heads up. Although all I got was an error (I had the link typed as http://http:/) when I clicked on it... not sent to Microsoft.DaveQB wrote:Hey Judland
Do you know your link to Kanotic on your blogs sends you to Microsoft ??
Is thata funny joke i am missing or a typo ??
Anyway, I fixed it. Thanks again.

fluxbox
This old fart has been weening himself off KDE and on to fluxbox on his laptop. (Presario 700 AMD 1.3ghz 256meg/Kanotix). Sitting here right now with with 6 VD's Firefox, Thunderbird a couple of Eterms and xmms running still have a cool 100 meg free and I don't notice any slowdown. After several wreck and rebuilds due dist-upgrade chaos, I have left kanotix install fairly pristine with only a few carefully choosen app upgrades.
Note: under KDE the same load would be close to swapping. I have, over the years, used many desktops and landed on KDE cause it did what I wanted and help the old fart move to more modern based GUI tools (mutt->tbird etc). It still remains my desktop of choice on the big iron workstation (lotsa pump, lotsa memory fast disks).
But I tell ya so far my fluxbox experience has been positive and if it continues I may let the flux spread through my entire universe. Beside with Aeon Flux the movie coming soon the thought of leather clad Charlize Theron wallpapers on flux desktops... ahhh it just gets my old fart heart a pumping.
