;i live in michigan. i decided earlier this year to drop kick windows for good. here were my thoughts at the time:
;i enjoy the tech show because i like the tech show boys, i enjoy their discussions, i like their opinions and i share many of them. i am not in a position right now where i have any number of "geek" friends within arms reach, so the show is a bit of a catharsis too. it helps to know that there are others out there that share the same frustrations.22 july 2005
leap of faith
;as i write this, i am backing up data off my windows partition onto a dvd-r. "why?" you ask? because i have finally had it with windows. yes, yes, i have told myself (and my wife) that i'm giving it up before. i even have fedora core installed on my laptop, dual booting with windows xp. this time, i am nuking my laptop's harddrive completely. i am *not* dual booting with windows. i am moving to linux and i am going to suffer through having to learn a new system before i will be able to do the tasks i used to do at the speed i used to do them. the end result will most certainly be that i will work much faster, focussed, and freely. i will likewise have a rock solid system. i know this because i have faith in free software. i have faith in my ability to learn. i have faith that *anything* but microsoft is better.
;so, i am taking the leap of faith: tonight i am leaving windows behind. i'm not even saying "goodbye," i am just formatting the drive with dban and moving on.
;i have chosen also to part ways (at least for now) with the fedora distribution or any other red hat based distribution. firstly, simply because it takes a very long time to boot—even on my 2.4GHz pentium 4 laptop with 1GB of RAM. secondly, because i want to learn *linux*, not a particular distribution. namely, moving to another distribution with remove the temptation to rely on red hat's package management system, rpm.
;the distribution i am choosing to switch to is slackware—specifically, version 10.0, because i have the disks that i burnt last year. the sole reason i chose slack is because of the fellas at the linux link tech show, who all run slackware and love it.
;so, without further ado, i am off to boot dban....
