Ham Radio

I know that some of you out there are hams, as am I - KB3QHA. Locally (Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton) I usually listen on the 146.94 and 147.045 repeaters. For HF, I have a 20M dipole and my rig is a Yaesu FT-450AT. I usually monitor in the 14.235-14.299 range.

If you're a ham, have you integrated Linux into your station? Myself, I have not. I have a Rigblaster Nomic for packet and RTTY but I have problems with my rig. I have posted the email below that I sent to Yaesu and the Yaesu Yahoo Groups if anyone wants to read it and has any suggestions. Yaesu's tech support suggestion was to do a full reset. But the radio is only four months old so I don't understand why it wouldn't work right out of the box.

Under Windows I can receive using FLDigi and Digipan. Under Linux, I have FLDigi but it doesn't seem to receive. The only thing different is that for my Linux box, I need to use a DB9 to USB adapter to connect the radio. Perhaps I need a module loaded?

That's enough of my problems for now but I would be interested to see if anyone out there has integrated Linux into their shack and in what capacity.

I haven't done much on the digital modes since we went to zero sunspots as the norm, but prior all my PSK, Feld-hell, and MFSK digital work was done on Linux with Fldigi which linked to Fl_logbook, both programs written by Dave, W1HKJ.

Lately, my ham activities have been repeaters and 40m, 80m SSB. I do still keep a 2m packet station up and message back and forth with some other hams occasionally. Our emergency threats in this area are mainly flooding with possible earthquakes, so good ole 2m packet is good for passing traffic with a lot of detail that doesn't lend itself to CW or SSB. I've even upgraded my old KPC-3 TNC to 512k of memory, which is a lot for text messages, .

I am newer to amateur radio than I am to Linux. Being an avid Slackware user, I don't need an introductory distro but that doesn't mean I can't try it. It looks a bit dated (last update in April '05) and, plus, I wonder what packages are in it. I already have a few from the now removed /extra/ham directory installed on my machine.

There is also the digiup live CD based on Puppy Linux and featuring Dave's software. Not sure what the state of development is on it as the first iso link isn't good at the moment. This was a live CD you could boot to try his software.
