Innovation is one thing but marketing is another. Look at Microsoft - they are a marketing company. Repeat: they are a marketing company. They do very little, if any, innovation. However, they are able to take what they have and market it; and, with a 90% market share in the desktop operating system niche and being the de facto standard when it comes to desktop office software like word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation (PowerPoint, (sorry, OO Impress doesn't come close)) software, their marketing strategy works. Apple is no different - look at the iPod, iPhone, and iTunes. Who cares if you innovate? Companies like Apple and Microsoft have proven that marketing makes the company successful - it's all in the packaging. Quality is now secondary to jazzy commercials, "cool" product names, and CEO's who wear black turtlenecks instead of neckties. (ok, so I started out picking on MS and closed with picking on Apple; both frequently fill me with great ire). </rant>
