Mr. Starks, I am sure you strongly believe in what you are doing but I cannot either support your efforts or allow them to happen in my classroom. At this point, I am not sure what you are doing is legal. No software is free and spreading that misconception is harmful. These children look up to adults for guidance and discipline. I will research this as time allows and I want to assure you, if you are doing anything illegal, I will pursue charges as the law allows. Mr. Starks, I along with many others tried Linux during college and I assure you, the claims you make are grossly over-stated and hinge on falsehoods. I admire your attempts in getting computers in the hands of disadvantaged people but putting linux on these machines is holding our kids back.

This is why I question the integrity and qualifications of many teachers here in the US today. Here are students that are excited about learning something new. You'd think that the teacher would actually DO SOME RESEARCH on GNU/Linux to find out what it's about, just as she would expect her students to do. "Do as I say, not as I do," seems to be the principle these "teachers" are getting on their way out of college. I see this kind of thinking on a daily basis since I do work for the Miami-Dade County school system here in Florida (which is a mess in and of itself). And the ones who usually lose out are the kids. Thankfully, there are some diamonds in the rough that do get it, and I applaud their efforts.

Kudos also to Mr. Starks on his response. Let's hope this gets some more exposure.

I was an adjunct instructor at the college level for ten years. I believe in linux 100 percent. If agnostic teachers feel uncomfortable with linux, They need to be introduced to districts that use linux exclusively. If they saw what some school districts are doing with ltsp as well as independent linux clients, their jaws would drop. There needs to be a listing of school districts that use linux and how they use it. That list really needs to be publicized everywhere it can be. We use linux and ltsp exclusively in our private school and have not looked back. One thing I might add is that besides using wine or crossover office, linux will very easily interface with windows (rdp) terminal servers and traditional citrix servers. Since everything will be going to virtual machines in the host environment, the os you are using should not matter. Anyway, Linux will also interface with Apple Mac terminal servers via a vnc client. That way you can phase in linux with the least of fuss. Been there done that.

Update:
if someone feels uncomfortable with getting linux for free, they can always go to Novell to get Suse or Redhat for theirs.
