uurg... and i just bought a ASUS EEE 1000. i even paid more then the windows equivalent. but, i felt like supporting a company that was supporting linux. now ASUS has turned its back on us.
and really, is anything better with windows?

This is truly a shame, but the writing was on the wall with Asus. They seem to have slowly but surely distanced themselves from GNU/Linux in favor of Windows. It pains me because I purchased their GNU/Linux version of the Eee PC 901 in support of their efforts with GNU/Linux. This just feels like a slap to the face. Usually, I wouldn't have considered the Asus, but that was changing thanks to my 901. Unfortunately, I don't think I can really place my confidence in them anymore for future considerations.
Thankfully, there are companies like System76 that fully support GNU/Linux. Even Dell is one to consider, especially since they've expanded the Ubuntu option to all their netbooks (but at no price difference from the XP version, so they lose some points for that IMO). Beyond that, most seem to be using GNU/Linux as a way to pressure Microsoft on OEM licensing, and while it might be good for them, it's a sad thing for GNU/Linux users to witness.

On the other hand Assus is out to make money and you can bet that microsoft is paying for that link on their site. I don't see Xandros or any other Linux company throwing money at Assus to have a link like that.
Assus used linux to make money and to continue to make money. They have not abandoned Linux all together.

But then what about Dell and their expansion of Ubuntu on all their netbooks? As it stands, I don't think that Asus has done this with all of their netbooks, and there's less mentioned about GNU/Linux Eees from Asus as time passes. Not so with Dell, who just recently even introduced a new netbook for the educational market, the Latitude 2100. Even the base system for this model comes with Ubuntu preinstalled (and 8.10 at that). I'm sure Canonical has a lot to do with the Ubuntu push, but wouldn't Xandros be doing the same thing with Asus?
I understand that many companies have used GNU/Linux as a way to make money and twist Microsoft's arm, but if Dell can help promote GNU/Linux with Ubuntu and Canonical, I don't see why Asus can't do the same with its choice.
