Since most sofas and couches have plenty of padding, why not modify your couch or sofa to house computers. It could be a whole new cottage industry. The vibration from the computers could be used for massaging someone using the couch or sofa.

Seems like a good way to come home to your place surrounded by yellow tape, :).

I think the secret is quiet fans and improving airflow. My HP case here is quiet. The fans are variable and only run faster as the heat increases, so I never hear them fully except when I turn on the machine. And I made sure to buy a quiet video card as well so I didn't ruin things.

But you could do a lot with other setups, go to a bigger fan, possibly slow it down with a resistors, there might even be some simple DIY heat sensor circuits you could use with a larger fan where it only runs when needed. Maybe investigate and find out exactly what fan is the noisy culprit. There might be some simple replacements.

I did find this one site dedicated to silent pcs that should be a good source of ideas.

The sofa idea could be implemented without a risk for fire. Replacing existing fans with fans using brushless motors maybe the best idea.
