What do you want from TLLTS year 7

Post by dann » Fri Aug 07, 2009 7:50 pm

We are entering into year 7 of TLLTS and I would like to know what you guys would like to hear more of or less of or whatever. What suggestions do you have? Besides improving audio quality! I am working on that, I just ordered a new sound card and hopefully that will help some.

So fire away and be as candid as you like.

Oh, and any hate mail make sure to send a copy to linc, he loves that.

Been listening to the show for awhile now. Always enjoy it.

Sound quality improvements will be nice, I don't find it annoying (although the echo can be a little disconcerting).

Myself while I enjoy the guests you have on, I find I enjoy the banter back and forth between you guys when talking about your latest Linux endeavors. Things like trying out a new distro, problems you had, things that worked better than they do with other distro's or older versions. Or discussing getting Linux working on some project you had (MythTV setup, using a new MP3 player with Linux, setting up the new server with various VM's, etc).

Regardless, just my opinion. Love the show as is, but always enjoy when you guys talk about your Linux related experiences/projects.

Keep up the good work!

Mike

More listener participation and inclusion. Maybe have a forum thread dealing with what current tech news it would be fun to have you guys touch on each week. More call-in shows, or maybe a part of each show set aside for listener call-ins. Congrats and good luck on year 7, and many more.

Other than sound improvements....maybe a dedicated Linux news segment for the first couple of minutes...and keep the rest of the show as it is free wheeling and free form round table like...it makes for great listening. I listen to the show by podcast and not live.

Keep up the good work.

I echo much of what greggh said, plus I'd also like to see you guys invite some of the guests you had on three years ago on the show for a new talk. Plus more "stories" from Dann would be much welcomed! :P

There are so many projects out there. I especially enjoyed the episode with the fellow from KDE and the month of Myth episodes, but I also really like when there is a guest on from a project that I don't know much about. The sound quality really seems fine to me - the one exception is the odd time that there is a heavy echo.

The 4m30s intros are getting pretty tedious.

Recently, I have started to run the following command on the MP3s to split it up, so I can skip the intros and conventions chat (I'm in the UK, so couldn't care less about US conventions).

Code: Select all

mp3splt -t 4.30 -o @f_@n tllts.mp3
Other than that, more interviews would be good. You guys do the best interviews.

Year 7? Figure out what you need to fix the sound quality of at least the four stayers, and then ask for donations. The sound sucks now, and OK sound is important for a podcast (in addition to content, of course).

intro at the end not at the beginning? Mention that you have intros for X but dont have 5 minutes of intros?

Touch base with previous guests regarding HW for linux (home automation, HTPC, etc).

The banter is awesome, and please do another windows episode!

I'll agree with the need for sound quality improvements. Since you've adapted the Linux Cranks format it's really gotten bad.

I don't think a new sound card will fix it, though. Last night I heard somebody dirnking into their mic (a can opening, puring into a glass, then a few minutes of gulping, over and over). Then there's people yelling at dogs and kids, and various miscellaneous background noise. If you're using compression, it makes the background noise worse. And why was Chad on the call if he was running?

If people could be more considerate of what they're putting into their mcrophones it would go a long way.

It's not a show anymore, it's just a bunch of guys on a call, saying whatever they want. I've always said it's your show and you guys should do what makes you happy. It's just getting to be something that's not fun to listen to.

I beg to differ. I think that all of those things kind of make it a little more personable as a show. Sure, some of the gremlins should be worked out (except for Dann's audio fail before the show starts...keep that :P), but who cares if someone is drinking something or if Chad wants to call in during a marathon? Stuff like that is part of what makes TLLTS what it is. Remember that "playfaul banter" mentioned in the intro? There you have it!

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, of course, and if you have issue with it then fair enough. No one is forcing anyone to listen to the show. Also, you have to understand that sometimes people are calling into the Asterisk box through a low-bandwidth connection or from an actual phone, and putting out a 2-hour show at 44.1 Khz/128k-bitrate minimum is going to get awfully large. There have to be some tradeoffs taken into consideration.
