Distribution reviews on the show?

I remember Dann doing a Ubuntu review "a while" back and I was wondering why there really hasn't been a distro review (or showdown

) on the show recently except for Pat's thoughts of Kanotix on ep. 96

One thing that really makes me not wanna read a distro review at say linux.com or at madpenguin.org is that thy're all old-style reviews focusing on the installation and not-important-anymore stuff like that.

I like reviews that looks at stuff like the stability of the desktop apps, how often do something crash, polish of the desktop, intergration, control panels...

We'll do more reviews in the future. Suse is the only 'major' distro I've never checked out. I'll give it a whirl. Maybe I'll try it out this weekend as I'm recovering from my bronchitis.

Sounds great, the only site that I actually like reading reviews from these days is madpenguin.org, but it's always more fun and insightful, IMHO, to listen to a review because with your voice you can demonstrate iratation or excitement which another element to the whole thing

Just as a little tip for ya, if you want Flash and a lot of that stuff right on the disks, get the so called "SUSE Linux 10 Evaluation edition", it's just a label Novell has given it for some odd reason, but it is indeed a full SUSE Linux distro, which I am running right now.

Just as a little warning/reminder, there is an issue with Firefox and the Xcursor right out of the box, but there is a fix for that available through YaST Online Update, and to make installation of Windows Media codecs painfree, I have a little article mirrored on my blog that helps with that: Hacking OpenSUSE
Also, since the openSUSE project is sponsored by a major corporation they are shy about multimedia support but they do have mp3 support which is good, and if you follow the guide above you can have MPlayer and cool stuff, since SUSE has a NICE KDE desktop you may want to get KPlayer (Not KMPlayer) as a slimmed down frontend at http://kplayer.sourceforge.net/

I don't know if thats such a good idea...sounds like a full show on Gentoo bashing...doesn't sound like fun to me (since im running Gentoo)

LOL, Pat has already kind of reviewed Gentoo, and I don't think they have that big changes that often, so I don't think that will be necessecary

I'm writing this post on the Suse install. The install went ok for the most part. The first time it booted up it locked on me. Second time around it was ok. The install didn't ask if I was running static IP. Once up and running YAST would not save my DNS addresses. What a pain in the ass. I finally figured out how to get it to save. KDE 3.5 is nice enough, not much different than 3.4.3. It's prettty responsive. The update utility is not working yet for this version. This 10.1 release just came out so maybe the servers aren't setup properly yet. So far I'm not that impressed. I'll give it a couple days before getting my notes together.

Pat. you're running an alpha version man

10.0 is the latest stable version

KDE 3.5 is at RC1, SUSE is a little bleeding edge but what they include is always the latest stable versions of programs to my experience.

I'll wait for the official 10.1 release then. It wouldn't be fair based on this experience.

Why don't you just get the 10.0 release which is pretty new, released in October. The final 10.1 won't be out until March or something like that, you don't have to download all five ISOs, you can install off of FTP.
