does anybody know how to get vmware workstation to see an existing windows install and boot off of that. would be cool if I could create a vmware image of an existing install and then use vmware player to run it. I can't install windows since I don't have a license copy and would like to use the existing install I got from work to create an image.

Wouldn't that be illegal? If you're willing to take an image from work, why not just use a pirated copy of Windows? Legally it's the same thing, because you'd be running Windows on a machine for which you don't have a license.

not if I am dual booting the machine and running on the same machine no it's not illegal - that is the only place I would run it - because work has some microosft only sites on their intranet.

It wasn't clear that you were doing this on the same machine. It may still be illegal according to Microsoft, because you have multiple installs, and a VM may be considered a different "machine."

the point is I don't want multiple installs - I used vmware a long time ago and I know I use to run windows nt from the actual partition it was installed on. that way if it got updated it was updated once and that was it. at least I thought I ran it that way. but with this workstation 5 it doesn't seem to have that kind of choice. so maybe I can't.

I also installed vmware player on a windows computer to run a linux image and it just went bad. the cdrom desappeared and then eventually I couldn't boot the computer.
