Novell solutions in ep. 137

Hey, new to the show, so I'm not quite sure who to direct this to, but the guy that was talking about the whole "I'm gonna have to implement AD for local user accounts" needs to check out the Dynamic Local User function in ZENworks. Works great, no AD required.

And why would you move from NetWare+NSS to OES-Linux+Samba? OES-Linux provides NSS and NCP, so you get the same exact user experience that you are used to. You can continue to use the Novell client, and if you implement DLU, you're golden.

THESE things are what you need to setup in a lab to show to your co-workers.

I use the OES-Linux with NSS and NCP. It works very well. We've found performance for some apps to be faster on OES-Linux than OES-Netware.

Here is the problem with the DLU we had. By the time we were done testing the amount of information that the profile would drop down on each workstation exceeded 50mb. We were concerned that having multiple labs full of students each dropping down 50+mb profile per session would bog the network, result in slow logins and thus impact instructional time.

We were concerned about that impact. I have not ruled out DLU, as I hear this would be the same issue with AD profiles.

Each individual profile has to store the user setting and application settings. Those settings for Office alone are monsterous. The other option we saw was to have the All Users area on each workstaiton set up wtih the default application settings. But if we were to add an application along the way we would need to make sure every "All Users" area would get the application information also.

When I brought this up to a number of people at the time, no one had any answer.[/i]
