Novell & OpenExchange (to track in 2005)

Post by Erik_ » Mon Jan 10, 2005 6:31 am

Guys, you mentioned in your last Podcast the best Linux things in 2004, and you talked about Novell and Ximian/SuSE.

I think there is another interesting thing to follow with Novell in 2005. It's their implementation of OPEN-XCHANGE http://mirror.open-xchange.org/ox/EN/community/ and calling it the SUSE LINUX Openexchange Server 4.1 http://www.suse.com/us/business/products/openexchange/ . The screenshots are pretty interesting. I know of at least 2 that are already implementing this solution. They don't want to be pushed/locked in a Microsoft Exchange environment.

Actually, SuSE OpenExchange has been kicking around for a while. It was only last year that the engine behind it was released as Open Source, although it does look like an interesting project.

This is a project I am very interested in checking out. I took a look about two years ago when they were just getting it out to the public. They seem to have come a long way baby!

Yes, me to. Id really like to have a viable alternative to Exchange - I dont think we are too far away. This book http://www.syngress.com/catalog/?pid=3050&desc=1 promised a complete solution for moving from Windows (including Active Directory) and migrating from Exchange but when I had a flick through, there was a boxout about openXchange and the fact that they hadnt had time to review it before the book was released. So I think it would be better to wait for the next verison of this book

Also the openGroupware guys do a liveCD version (as both of these are pretty hard to setup), with a complete working demo but I think its in German :?
