RSS feed sucks

Post by mace » Wed Apr 13, 2005 10:26 pm

I love your show, but the podcast RSS feed sucks. It always downloads old show that I have already listened to and it never gets the newest show. I always have to download the newest show manually.

What client are you using? You are the first to report this problem. I test the feed every week and I only get the latest shows using bashpodder.

It sounds as if your client is not grabbing the the feed nor is it logging the episodes that have already been downloaded. The feed hosts 10 episodes. The latest show bumps the oldest off the list.

I am using Doppler and it works great with all the other podcasts I download.

I was just over on the doppler forums looking for similar problems, but did not find anything. All I can say right now is that our feed does work in other clients and it is rss compliant.

I don't have any windows system I could test this on though. I'll keep poking around.

It happened again. I just got show 77 last night. I guess I will have to be on the lookout for a doppler upgrade.

I installed Doppler on a system here and did some tests. I set up a dummy feed using the original tllts.rss file and basicallys tripped out all but one show (show 77). Doppler had no problem download the show.

I then added shows 78 and 80 to the feed and again, Doppler downloaded only these two shows.

I then went in and edited the feed to point to the our mp3 feed: tllts.rss and told Doppler get the shows. This downloaded all but shows 77, 78, and 80 all of which were already downloaded.

I then deleted the history file and the existing mp3 files from the workstation and had doppler retrieve the files. It downloaded episodes 75 to 80 sans 79 for some reason.

I checked the rss feed and noticed that the section for 79 was removed so I replaced this in the feed. The feed on my workstation also had episode 74 listed so when I scp'ed it up to the server and ran doppler retrieve shows 74 and 79 were pulled down.

Therefore, Doppler is working with our feed and it seems to be working appropriately. My process for using doppler was to download, install, and add our feed. I did not set any other options in doppler nor did I explore what possible options one could set.

I took a look at the doppler history file that was created and saw the shows listed appropriately when they were downloaded. The shows counted down from 80 to 75 sans 79. 79 and then 74 were added when I changed the feed and retrieved again.

I wll test Doppler again next week when the next show is added.
