Gutsy sucks

The only thing that ever really has irked me about the buntus is the disregard for using the traditional standard configuration files. I just checked and my serial connection still works off my server. I am using an off the shelf usb to serial. uname -a gives 2.26.22-14-server.

Test hardware configuration is:
486 laptop <==> null modem cable <==> usb 2 serial <==> ubuntu server

Right - like I mentioned, this only affects keyspan, which has traditionally been very popular among linux using netadmins because of excellent vendor support. What's really irking me about gutsy is the fact that they have broken several things that have *always* just worked, IME, for no good reason I can ascertain. Their configs, as far as I can tell, are mostly debian configs, which are not at all my favorites.

I have not used slackware in over 10 years. It might be fun to check out again. Anyway on the debian systems I have some of the configuration files are different than on ubuntu. I have not tried the debian testing yet though.

FYI:

Looks like the issue I was having with my connexant modem using the hsfmodem drivers was due to a conflict caused by some new "softmodem drivers" that ubuntu now packages. I used the restricted manager to remove those drivers, and my nasty, nasty, I'm-a-badman-for-using-it blob works again now. My pcmcia stuff all still appears to be useless, though.
