Microsoft hints at delay to Vista

I just compiled Qt 4 on my pentium 4 with integrated intel video. the qtdemo program ran sluggishly consuming 15-20% of my CPU. Even if we assume Vista is only as slow as Qt 4, a whole lot of people are going to have to upgrade.

I have heard that the move to Qt4 should give KDE upto 30% performance increase in a few cases, personally I think it's gonna be faster, but not exactly 30% but faster I believe it is gonna be.

And by the way, people that have hardware that can run KDE 3.5 smoothly with all the eye candy, bells and whistles turned on can certainly run KDE 4.0. And the good thing about free software in general is that you don't HAVE to upgrade, you can just keep using your tweaked version of KDE 3.5.x if your machine can't handle 4.0.

Speaking of a "linux army", I'm approaching 18 I still have my national service to do, maybe it could be changed to nationalenguin service!

Anyway, funny that there hasn't been anything like that since then, at least not to my knowledge, where did the magic of GNU/Linux go?

How many people did that protest turn from Windows 98 to Linux? How many people just looked at them and said "man, what a bunch of weirdos! Linux must be for freaks!"

If someone wants to get together a group to stand in front of Best Buy and hold up signs that say "Linux... It's not just for freaks and geeks anymore!" then I'm there.

Who are the bigger dorks? The dorks waiting till midnight so they can go buy windows or the dorks who know better? Anytime I've seen people protesting I wonder to myself don't these people have jobs? For this I would be willing to go out there and make a spectacle. The press would have to cover it. I down for this. It's all a question of when and where?

Or the dorks that sleep outside of stores in order to get a gaming console, a Harry Potter book, Windows Vista (Especially when they can just hit BitTorrent and get it there). By the way, this whole concept of sleeping outside a store could be quite scary, especially if Dann comes around!

Yeah, in fact, I don't really think Linux needs anything but press to get users' attention.

Ok, but where are we going to get normal people to join us?

Bottom line: linux and free software are a means to an end.

We're already here. Look at TLLTS. These are just normal everyday American guys. No sandals, no long hair, no shouting idealistic zealotry (for the most part

Agree with that. It's just software. Berating people for buying Windows doesn't help our cause. Windows is it's own punishment.

We shouldn't stand there and say "Windows suck!". Even though it does. We need to educate people on the positive merits of F/OSS. I'm trying to convince people where I work that we should switch. Check out this article:

Very valid points. We need t do the same for regular windows users. I would say to them:
Are you tired of viruses?
Are you tired of malware?
Are you tired of paying $ for software?
Are you tired of your machine crashing?

Regular poeple will get it eventually. We just need to repeat it many many times.

Are you sure about that? Microsoft are very good at making people believe their crappy "Get The Facts" propaganda, and it's always the people that could make the difference that believes it.

We have to at least try. If Dan ever finishes that video clip of his 7 year old daughter installing Ubuntu we could use it to prove our point. Does that mean we'd be exploiting his kid?

Perhaps? How funny would it be if I did a presentation to the technology people in my company and some windows admin jumps up and says "Linux is soooo hard to install". Then I play them the video of a 7 year old installing Ubuntu. The reaction would be priceless!!
