Yeah, I use amarok to pull my podcasts and gnupod to synch. Gnupod really only allows you to add or remove, not really "sync." I haven't found this to be an issue at all though. One thing I'd really like is the ability to ignore directories when filling my ipod up, though, since I have a lot more music than will fit on my iPod.
IIRC it works fine over usb2, but I don't use usb2 since I haven't figured out a way to get my workstation or lappy to charge my ipod over it.

Yes I have an X5 and the video playback isn't that great. Its a pretty small screen and it only supports 15fps but thats not why I bought one. Its just a nice extra, although its not unbearable if you want good video hopefully the successor will be better or you could get a PMP (I suggest the iAudio A2
). I use it for Family Guy and some various other Google Video clips, I have watched full movies on it but its not very cinematic

Ah. Well, after doing some digging around on the internet and apples site, I discovered that the 3g iPods WILL NOT CHARGE via usb. What a bunch of crap.

I could not agree with you more! I can't stand having to rename every podcast becase someone decided to change the naming convention every week. One week a podcast is tagged podcast the next it is blues (when it is not) the next it is rock. TLLTS does a pretty good job though. I just save that to its own playlist and go from there.
Also podcasts that dont have either the date, or the show number as the title. Sometimes I have over 15 of one podcasts, and I have to scroll to find out which ones I have already listened too. IT Conversations is good for this, I wish he would add a date in the title.

For a followup to my last post they didn't release any new players as Cebit (which shocked a lot of people at iAudiophile.net). Right now I am not that happy with my iAudio X5 since they will likely not be supporting it anymore (in regard to firmware). I am starting to think I would rather have an A2, although it isn't quite as small as my x5 (
image) it has much better video and the wider screen makes it better for text files and photos (pr0n
j/k ) it also has everything my X5L does (although the 30GB is $100 more than the 30GB X5L). I will be sending it back over the weekend and hope it works perfectly when it comes back.
EDIT: the latest (and probly last big) fimware enables you to use the USB-OTG port as a regular USB port for your X5 (although it can't charge it using it) but the A2 doesn't even use a subpack which is another thing I don't have to carry around.
