GPG vs. VeriSign

Okay, I'm deep in an e-mail debate with our company's IT manager regarding digital signing of e-mails and the best method of doing it.
I say, use GnuPG/PGP and open source software... saving $1,000s in cost.
Mr. corporate IT says, use VeriSign because that's the standard.
I haven't been able to find any document that indicates the loss of any functionality or security by using the open source alternative. All I see is the loss of company capital.
Anyone have any insight on this sort of thing?
