okay - I have had it with dealing windows. I dual boot a laptop and I have added a usb optical mouse - booted into suse - it found it fine didn't have to reboot, deal with driver or anything - the way computing is suppose to be.

booted into windows - didn't see the mouse - okay had to open the laptop and switch screen so then I could use the touchpad - pain in the arse.

then I got some kind of message on the toolbar saying it found a new device I cllicked it went away - still now mouse - went to website of mouse manufacturer to get drivers - could not find - so I had to get to a server that I was doing a restore on so I booted to suse to get my work done then I rebooted windows and finally the mouse worked.

can someone please explain to me in the year 2006 (this is windows xp by the way their latest and greates) I still have to reboot to add a USB mouse in windows. Billy if you are out there please explain - you too Steve - can you stop throwing chairs and explain this to me please. I feel like I am still in my dos days with my 386 sx when I use windows. Glad I don't use it to get any mission critical work done. just have to use at work for those wonderful locked in active x websites that are internet explorer only.

thanks for letting me vent - and just get windows the hxxx out of my way!

I've had a sort of opposite experience. In my case both linux and windows are able to use Intellimouse when I plug it in the USB port, both on bootup or when hotplugged. With windows, everything worked perfectly with no config necessary, but under Ubuntu none of the special buttons nor the mouse wheel are detected. I haven't bothered to config it because I don't want to have to manually do it every time I want to play a flash game that requires fast movement of the mouse.

Annoyingly, if I plug the mouse into the PS/2 port before bootup, neither OS will bother enabling the thinkpad nipple-mouse-thingy.

honestly I think multiple buttons is gay, I'm with linc, the best interface is a clit/nipple. I had worked fine with the touchpad and never had any issue rgarthing linux not detecting it.
On the other side I remember when configuring a desktop, the mouse wasn't being detected, and there are just a few type of mouse. PS/2-USB.
So telling which mouse I was using wasn't a problem.
I think later on I used the Intellimouse from Genius and the recognition whent fine on both OS.
