Up until today, I have been very happy with the default 2.4 kernel in Slackware, however, I now need to upgrade in order to install 2.6 kernel in order to support a new piece of hardware.

I have found directions for compiling a new kernel, but I was wondering if there is an easy guide that explains the steps that need to be taken to install the 2.6 kernel which comes as a Slackware package on the CD set. I know there are a number of Slackware users here, so I'm sure this is probably an easy question.

If you want to use a stock 2.6 kernel, you could just download a Slack package from: http://slackware.it/en/pb/

Grab the kernel-generic, kernel-modules, and alsa-driver packages from the /testing directory for your Slackware version from the site Wally linked to above or through a Slackware mirror on the Slackware site. Here is the link to the 10.2 /testing directory:

You will need to edit lilo or grub manually, I believe. Also, be sure to read Pat's README.initrd file in that same directory. You will need to make an initrd in order to boot it up. Here is a direct link to that readme:

That readme tells you everything you need to do. It's very easy to do.
