Running XGL on SUSE KDE

Post by granduke » Fri Jun 30, 2006 6:34 am

Hello,

I'm wondering if any SUSE KDE user, Tsuroerusu are you here? :) ,
has tried using XGL/Compiz on SUSE KDE. Trolling around other forums I seem to understand that under KDE one gets less features than using GNOME. And more importanly, for me, I believe that your will have to install GNOME libraries and functions, which I wouldn't want to do.
Am I correct in these two assumptions?

This is correct, because Compiz is both a compositing and a window manager which replaces Metacity or KWin, but unfortunately it doesn't work well with KDE. For example you won't be able to use virtual desktops and the taskbar gets very funky and disappears at times, all the effects does work, but the desktop environment itself is utterly frustrating to work with.

This is also correct, Compiz currently has some dependencies on GNOME's window manager, Metacity, and some other GNOME stuff.

A bunch of weeks ago I did hear a bunch of rumors about a KDE extension for Compiz, but so far the stuff that was in CVS has been declared "dead" so I don't think this has gotten anywhere.

Right now, XGL is quite GNOME specific, that's to say that compositing couldn't be built directly into KWin, the KDE window manager, because this is what the Fedora guys are doing to Metacity with AIGLX.

As a KDE user, of course I look at this and is a little bummed that it doesn't work, but at the same time I still look forward to KDE 4.0, even without a 3D rendered desktop it's going to have some exciting features.
