I am sort of an irc noob. My knowledge is bascially open xchat-->connect to freenode-->type /join #{whaterver channel}.

So Wed I thought I might join the irc during the show. I couldn't figure out how to get there

I understand that the server is thelinuxlink.net and the channel is techshow but I wasn't sure how that fit into xchat. I would add thelinuxlink.net as a server but it never seemed to work.

Is thelinuxlink.net at the same level as freenode?

Can someone explain how to join using xchat?

Start up xchat and add a new network. Call it thelinuxlink.

With thelinuxlink highlighted select edit. You should see a new window with servers at the top. By default I believe newserver/6667 is listed. Edit that entry and change newserver to thelinuxlink.net:

thelinuxlink.net/6667

The bottom of this window has a entry for channels to join, enter:

#techshow

Press close and then connect and you should be in.

Thank you. It was the part about newserver/6667 that was tripping me up.
