I'm generally pissed about this, to a lot of people who have been longtime SUSE users, this is like renaming Slackware, or putting SysV stuff into Slackware or some other major change that people don't welcome.

FINALLY! There have been so many people confused about the name (probably because the wiki is located at opensuse.org). This is similar to when Red Hat named Fedora and I think it is in their best interests.

I don't think that's the problem, the problem is that the stupid press all use the name "openSUSE", and some of them even know that it was completely false, I happen to know that is the case with Steven Vaughan-Nicols.

Personally I feel like "Why should the distro name's name, which it has had for pretty much a decade, change because a lot of lamers who can't freaking read plain english at opensuse.org!!?!?!?!", and the plain english text I am referring to is this: "The openSUSE project is a worldwide community program sponsored by Novell that promotes the use of Linux everywhere. The program provides anyone with free and easy access to the world's most usable Linux distribution, SUSE Linux.

I don't get why Novell keeps making these names confusing. "SLED 10" is cool, but Novell wants us all to say "SUSE Linux blah blah blah".

I don't like Novell messing with the heritage of this distro; first depreciating KDE and now changing the name.

I like having a big company backing my favorite distro, but sometimes you got to wonder.

SUSE is all about getting new users right? Well it comes with the territory. If you want new users don't start yelling at them just because they got the name wrong and don't try to confuse them with a url that clearly says OpenSUSE.org and don't expect novices to go to the site and read everything that's on it, its not going to happen and never will. I can't understand what the big deal is, it's still going to be the same distrobution, just a different name.

That's because if you pronounce "SLED" you're saying "hooker" in like dutch I think it was.

I can understand why they would be in favor of GNOME, as ISVs don't have to pay licensing fees to do proprietary software with GTK as they have to with Qt. And I don't really have that many problems with it, because SUSE's rock solid KDE support still shows it's pretty face like a pretty girl on a hot summer day, both in the community distribution and in SLED 10.

How concerned should they be of the tiny Dutch market? Nintendo wasn't worried about upsetting the massive US market with the name they chose.

LOL, nice one man. I agree, but you know, as a corporate entity you can't go calling your product a hooker now can you? Nintendo has strongly emphasized that Wii is meant to be pronounced like "we", NOT "wee", "whee" or whatever the idiotic jokers have come up with.

They actually did, they bought Ximian. I've heard rumors that Nat Friedman made a push for Novell to purchase SuSE Linux AG.
But whatever, a lot of former top SUSE execs did leave the company, for example founder Hubert Mantel.

The problem is not that they CAN'T it's that they WON'T and expecting them to stupid. Heck I didn't even read that, but the "Official SUSE Fanboy" corrected me. Honestly did you even read "The home for The Linux Link Tech Show and the LVLUG" at the top of the forum? Because I haven't until now. People usually read just what they came to the site for whether that's information or solving a problem or anything else. Unless you have a big dialog that says "The name of the distribution is SUSE not OpenSUSE" you have to expect this.

Yeah well, if it was me, I would just have kept the naming schemes intact and made Novell put out a press release type of thing to actually tell people how things actually was named very clearly so even the fools that did know of this naming scheme but through their news postings/articles blew air onto this fire of confusion.

Think about how much money and effort that would take instead of just changing the name. Also that might promote people being dicks about the name and yelling at noobies was already starting to happen.

If you think about it, how much money would it take to write up a press write-up of the situation? Now they have to change the artwork and titles in the manual that come with the retail box, and generally all the documentation.
