Some info on the upcoming Debian release. Looks like the popularity of Ubuntu has lit a fire under the collective asses of the Debian project.

I think droppng the number of archs they support has helped quite a bit. In some of the areas they're making big changes (Xfree to Xorg, GCC 3.* to 4.*) there have been rapid changes. It's good that they're getting up to date.

I hope they don't move too quickly, though. It's nice to have a distro around that meets the definition of rock solid stable.

I've got a Debian Sarge server going and I'm really enjoying it. I'm also testing out Debian Etch on a laptop and it's been working fine. It's pretty up to date and has been very stable for the most part, especially after upgrading the kernel. I like Debian a lot.

I tried Debian testing on a spare harddrive via a netinstall. I was very impressed. The new Gnome is very nice. This is coming from a self admitted KDE person. I'm seriously considering throwing it on my laptop when it comes back from servicing. Maybe having Ubuntu around has lighted a fire under the Debian developers. There was a recent change of leadership in the project right? I might have to get him on the show soon. We haven't had a Debian lovefest in a while.

Which Gnome are they running? I know 2.14 was a big improvement in performance over 2.12.

I think a lot of the probelm with SUSE 10.1 (which I recently installed for testing) being so slow and bloated is the fact that they use Gnome 2.12.

I haven't seen anything from 2.15/2.16 yet, but it looks like it will be in Fedora Core 6 in October.

Gnome 2.14. Very quick and responsive. I was very impressed.
