Original linux mascot ?

People,
I hope to have something clarified here. I have heard some rumours that the original linux mascot is a platypus instead of a penguin. I thought nothing of it initially till i ran across this really old copy of slackware and lo and behold swimming happily on the cover of it is a platypus ! Is that slackware's mascot or linux's mascot featured on the cover of that version of slackware ?
