AMD to drop ATI brand

Chip guru AMD has announced that it's going to drop the ATi brand name following its takeover of the Canadian graphics underdog. Gareth Cater from AMD told Custom PC that 'the new company will be called AMD,' meaning that we could shortly be seeing AMD-branded Radeon graphics chips.

Hopefully they'll improve ATI's historically poor support for Linux. I'd be stoked if their video cards worked as well as Nvidia's.

AMD has been very good at supporting free software in the past, I hope they free up ATi's drivers, specs and documentation, if they did that, I'd go out and buy the most expensive Radeon card which had free drives that I could afford.
Bad rumor; ATI is here to stay.

How has AMD supported free software? They make very fast very cheap chips, which we like, but that doesn't mean directly support free software.

I'm quoting off of the second link:

Also, AMD is very open about technical specs and stuff in general.
Now you see why I say AMD supports Free Software?
