OK folks. Those of you mirroring our files and those of you who hopefully want to.... WE NEED YOUR HELP!
It's starting to get pretty obvious to me that we are going to exceed our bandwidth - probably this month. Our previous host alloted 500gb per month but I doubt seriously they actually watched. Our new host allows us 750 gb per month and we're at almost 30% only 7 days into the month. That being said, what I think I need to do is a LugRadio style mirror rotation on the files.

My vision for the whol process is something like this:
You will make the file available for DL and then simply visit a webpage where you pick the episode and filetype and enter your file URL and a password. After that, each time someone visits the download page your site/file url will have a 1 in N chance of being the link on the page, N being the number of potential mirrors + 1.

You guys should really consider using Libsyn. That's what lots of podcasts use. Get the $5 or $10 a month plan and you get unlimited bandwidth. You'll never have to worry about bandwidth again.

Yeah, Chess is on to something. With Libsyn, you wouldn't need to use mirrors, and bandwidth woudn't be a concern anymore. You could even offer the high-quality Ogg files for direct download.

Just wondering aloud, how are the quality of the service and the prices of cachefly.com which leo's twit.tv uses ? The download speeds that I get from twit is pretty decent.

Has anyone actually used Libsyn? I've downloaded some podcasts hosted there and gotten slow download speeds and broken files.

The last time I looked into it, you get unlimited bandwidth, but very limited storage space. For $10 a month you could host the 4 most recent episodes, but no archives at all. My TLLTS archive on my mirror is nearly 2 gigs, and I've only been mirroring since episode 100.

I get probably 10 gigs of TLLTS traffic on my mirror per month at the very most. If you want to shift more bandwidth my way that's fine, I've got plenty. If you want to announce on the show that people should try to use mirrors instead of the main archive, that could help.

I get the files through a bashpodder run at about 1:30 AM, then manually mirror the files to my server at around 6:30 when I get up for work. I could work on automating the process so files are available earlier if I get time.

No, you do get the archive. The month quota is for the current month's episodes. All episodes are available in your Libsyn archive.

I use Libsyn for my podcast and it works great. The storage is just a monthly quota on the high-speed servers. You can have unlimited space once the files move to the archive. I have about 700 MB"s of files but use the 250MB plan. So gigabytes of files are no problem -- they are just on the archive server instead of the high-speed server.

The way it works is this: the plan you use gives you a certain amount of space on the high speed server per month. The idea is that your recent shows (i.e. the last month) are on the high speed network. Once the month is over, those files are moved to their archive where they are still available at the same URL but only on a slower network, since older shows are not downloaded as much as the newer shows. At the start of a new month, you get a new full quota of disk space for the next month's files. You also get unlimited bandwidth for all files. Works fantastically well.

I saw something recently that said about 80% of podcasts are using Libsyn. I use it and love it.

Great! What I am going to do is (shortly) create a page you can go to and add the URL for your mirrored feed and that will add you into the rotation for that file. I have it running now, but no way for mirrors to add their feeds yet, I just manually threw a couple peoples feeds for this week into the database (yours included). I'll let you know the specifics just as soon as I have the code working, and again, I really appreciate it!

Sure, but I already *pay* for bandwidth and hosting, etc. What's goint to happen the day libsyn has server problems? You'll only be able to get TechShow episodes

Seeing as how NPR and National Geographic use Libsyn, if that ever happens, you'll get a whole bunch of new interesting listeners!

While I'm thinking about it, the link to my mirror points to http://www.jeffratliff.info/mirror. Could you change it to point to http://www.jeffratliff.org/mirror ? It's not a big deal as all the domains point to the same place, but I can't guarantee the first domain will exist forever.

Yeah libsyn is starting to get under my skin a bit. My Life in Ohio show is there and quite regularly their upload quota script seems to screw up. Other then that, I have no complaints.

I think what's happening is some of the places like cachefly and limelight and even libsyn are starting to get throttled by ISP's. THAT'S the more common reason that things are slowing down.....CDN's are beginning to be throttled by ISP's because they are concerned about the other users on your branch of the network. It appears that comcast and others still advertise unlimited internet but don't really want you to USE unlimited internet.
