I have a Creative Zen Micro mp3 player. Which works great in linux as long as i choose mp3.
I was thinking of getting an Iriver Clix. (Ogg). Has anyone tried this one yet?

For two hundred bucks I'd just go with a GP2X! It's cheaper and it will do more for you. The purchase will also show your support for companies that choose to use Linux.

GP2X does seem cool, however my only issue with that is the short battery life and constant battery purchases. Which brings my cost to 200+. If it comes with some type of rechargeable battery in the future, I'm definitely on it!

You are aware of rechargable NiMH AAs, right? I bought two sets of Ray-O-Vac 15 minute rechargables and have been using them every day for the past six months.... no problems.

Double checking the specs. of the device may be wise, too. From the website it says you require Microsoft Windows to use. Although that could just be a marketing ploy, make sure you don't need to run some obscure piece of software to upload and operate the thing.

Also keep in mind that internal recharable batteries (the website doesn't specify what it uses) do wear out. After the 1 year warranty, what do you do if the battery no longer holds a charge? Might want to look into that as well.

Myself, well, when my AA rechargables don't hold a charge anymore, I just go down to the local Canadian Tire and buy another set. Ten bucks later, I'm back in business.

As with everything, there's good and bad points.

I did see that the Iriver device had a little remote control. That looked cool, but you certainly couldn't sit very far away from it if you are watching a movie (small screen and all). But, hey, gadgets are what makes things fun!

I'd still go with a clix (unless you want the game stuff). The reason being is that the GP2X is going to necessitate you to purchase a SD card to but the stuff on. Granted, it will only add about 40 for 1 GB(regular price....) then again, I just saw a deal on a 2 GB flashcard at Compusa....50 after instant savings and rebates....hmm...if I get that new camera I may have to get one of those....that would bring my 1 GB or higher flash collection to a total of 4 GB counting the new 2 gigger and the 2 1 GB cards I have. Hmm....ok...I changed my mind....get the GP2X!

If you just want an audio player I'd go with the Clix because it's smaller and has a larger storage and more battery life. However if you want some games and video then you should probably go with the GP2X. The Clix should work with the newest Amarok since it has support for MTP now although not sure about firmware upgrades...

I guess it all depends on what you want to do with the MP3 player too. I have an iriver T30 and I will normally just use that because it's small and handy. I need that because I normally bring my mp3 player for runs and that's about it. So I really don't need an MP3 player that has all the works but bulky. Just my 2cents

Isnt the clix a plays for sure device? That can almost guarantee non functionality in linux. My iRiver pmc120 is a brick, since I dumped windows. The thing wont work on anything but windows. Would watch what you buy.

Amarok supports MTP now

Not all of mtp has been decoded. Some devices use different parts of the protocol others (like the pmc120 and clix) use all of it. The simpler mp3 only players (and wma and soforth) have mostly been working for some time. Devices like mine probably will take years to get working. I am debating retrying Crossover and see if I can get WMP10 to run so I can talk to it or try that out.

Either way, I made a bad purchase. Really bad. Dont want to see others fuck up like I did.

Ok I dont know why most people just think iriver is the only solution when it comes to ogg. There are hundred of players that play ogg, they are listen on the vorbis webiste. They have different categories and pricerange.

And 80% are available to ship to the US.

Name one that does good video playback? Now name one that has a decent size screen? None of them work with Linux at this moment. Except maybe the iPod (which isn't that decent size of a screen, the whole point of the PMC120).

Plus, if you ever had seen a Clix, you would understand why he wants one. The things are awesome. Ogg playback is nice, but hardly a main reason to purchase either of the units that have been thrown out into discussion.

You might want to consider the Samsung YP-U2. I picked up a YP-U1 back in April, and it's a fantastic little audio player. It plays all bitrate Ogg files, has an internal rechargeable battery, and simply mounts as a USB storage device under Linux. Drag and drop.
