Other distros I've always meant to check out, but never did.

Rock Linux - yeah, more like LFS than an actual distro.

Lunar Linux - basically know nothing about it other than it's source based and it had a pretty solid rep years ago. I haven't heard much about it lately, but it seems to be reasonably up to date and maintained.

Sorcerer Linux - same as above. I don't know much about it other than it's source based and has funny package tool names. Pulling packages from "The Grimoire" sounds ominous!

Crux - I actually did install it once, quite a while back, but never really gave it much of a chance. I think I was confused by its less-linuxy approach. Or maybe I was just too stupid to run it. I can't remember, honestly - I just really liked their version of Tux.


Huh - maybe it's time for me to dig on the GCC screen saver for a while. Or maybe not - maybe I'm just sick to tears of dicking with routers and long to get back to some good old fashioned linux geekery. I have to admit that I find it hard to imagine liking a distro or community more than Arch.

The only one of those I've tried is Lunar Linux, and I wasn't able to get a complete system installed. You see, Lunar doesn't host any source tarballs themselves, so when you select which packages you want installed, it goes out and fetches them from the original maintainer's server, and if any one of them is down, you're fscked. I got through about 90% of the packages I selected, and then I got a 404 error for my xserver-xorg package because that server happened to be down. Talk about frustrating! Maybe they have since taken a Gentoo approach, and mirrored everything themselves to prevent things like that from happening. I don't know, haven't tried it in several months.

Huh - that's what sorcerer does too, I'm pretty sure. They should really host at least the base install - I can understand letting the rest come from source homepages, though. Still, it sounds like a versiontracking nightmare. Maybe not, though, the only way to know is to get off my ass and install, install, install.

Which means I'll prolly spend my weekend watching Naruto re-runs, drinking beer, and doing deadlifts instead

It looks like they are still maintaining it though, Grimoire looks very current according to DistroWatch - http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=sorcerer

Lunar started out as a fork of Sorcerer, so you'd probably be better off trying that, since they are atleast putting out releases.

Here's a cheaper, easier alternative:

• Get a hammer
  Hit yourself in the forehead with the hammer
  Think about how much you like Arch
  Wait until tomorrow
  Repeat

Same amount of pain, but a lot less trouble.

Yeah - I'l be spending this weekend upgrading my box and trying to get my hauppauge card working. I think the most realistic option for me to try (again) would be crux, but I hear what you're saying. Still, if I hadn't gotten so tired of all the regular distros I was using, I'd never had tried Arch. I was in charge of the 4 month old all last night - I guess I got bored.
