If you have read my blog at all you know by now I am not having any success encoding any of the tllts files to be usable on the iRiver in ogg format.

The iRiver requires a sample rate of 44100 and an average bitrate around 128kbps. This results in files that are around 100mb in size. Now that is way too big.

Anyone have an idea on how to get the files size down but the rates up? I'm beginning to think this is not possible.

i don't think it possible either,

i tried messing around with it using this to convert to wav:

mpg123 -s show.mp3 | sox -t raw -r 44100 -s -w -c 2 - show.wav

and then
oggenc -q n show.wav

but it wasn't having it,

its annoying how they limit the bitrate like that,

(it's also annoying how my pc jsut randomly powers off during the encoding, requiring me to remove the power from the psu for a couple of seconds before it will start again, gonna have to find out what that is)[/i]

I don't think you can get a real small file with those restraints.

the only other thing you can do is make sures its mono and use high quality compression.

So how did you go ??

I did not fare any better with encoding an ogg suitable for the iRiver that is not enormous in size. Frankly, I have given up on that. Oh, well. Hopefully better ogg support is in the mix down the iRoad.

If its any consellation, my mp3 player will only play 44100hrz files, anything else and no playback.

So your shows i have to re-encode to put them on my mp3 player. But hey it was cheap.

Ogg support yes, but do they (iRiver) have to comply and implemented all the features of Ogg ? All the frequencies and sampling rates ?

Have you looked into the alternate ogg encoder called aotuv http://www.rarewares.org/ogg.html

I found a post where someone mentioned the lowest usable ogg bitrate on the IRiver was 112.

I am looking at the T10 iRiver, anyone know it is has a great range of compatible sample rates/bitrates that it accepts ??

Becareful with new iRivers, they are technically only supported under Windows Media Player 10. Although you can get them to work using gphoto, it's more of a pain than it's worth. You may be better off looking at iAudios.

The iriver in question was the 710 series I believe.

I wonder if the hbr tllts file will work under the iRiver. Since mine is dead, I have no way of testing.

The other problem with the newer iRivers is that many don't have a line input or a microphone jack.

I have an iRiver 790 and it records mp3's pretty well. You can find them on ebay.

Thanx for that Dann. The reason i was looking at iRivers was becaus i thought they were known to be good with Linux.

This links shows your right, works in Linux, but with Gphoto and thats a PITA.

So iAudio is the recommended brand ??

I've been listening to the TLLTS hbr oggs on my IFP-890, and they sound great.

The ogg files play fine on my iRiver H340

Doing some research and this seems to only be a problem in EU and USA. So i should be right to buy an iRiver and expect it to be using UMS standard. Of course i will double check before purchase if i decide to go with an iRiver.

The GP2X looks another viable option though.
