I have to sort of admire the Debian folks for upstanding to the DFSG sometimes. However, I think that in today's day and age, the DFSG needs tweaked to better promote free software which Firefox is. So WHAT if the Mozilla Project insists on having their logo used? I may not understand everything at stake here, but this just sounds like the stuff that FLOSS software does NOT need....stupid pointless arguing.

Yeah, It's this kind of unneeded conflict that bogs down Debian. Personally, I think this whole thing is ridiculous. Firefox is one of the brightest spots in the open source world, and Debian should have made an exception here. This move simply hurts Debian, and Mozilla, and pisses off the end users.

I doubt it, really. Most folks who run debian as a desktop instead of *buntu or mepis or [insert name of debian retread here] probably do it for ideological reasons. I doubt they care about running ShitWeasel versus Firefox. That being said, there was a fair amount of discussion on the Arch boards about this, and it seems like the firefox folks might be overly zealous sometimes, too.

In any event, yep, this is one of the parts of FOSS that I personally find distasteful. Kind of like the Linux vs. GNU/Linux crap, and the protesting of vendors who actually do give binary code to the communities rather than nothing at all. I'm wondering at what point some of these kooks are gong to refuse to call it Linux because that's a trademarked name.

They should have stayed away from Weasel. Cuz eventually firefox will suck and then we'll want to call it crap weasel.

From all that I've read on this subject, I have to agree. I don't see how this forking of Firefox is helping anyone, other than stroking a few egos.

I mean, here's Firefox Corp. giving away free code (good code) and all they're asking is that distributors submit their patches for evaluation for use of the brand name, just so a level of quality can be maintained (or at least implied).

But now what is going to happen? Just a bunch of confusion that will make adoption of Linux by the noobie even more difficult. And I don't see this confusion ending with Debian... but all distros. based on Debian.

Linux geek: "Ubuntu uses the powerful IceWeasel web browser!"

Noob: "Yes, IceWeasel is great! Too bad this other Linux system (let's say Fedora for example) doesn't use IceWeasel."

Linux geek: "Well, it does. It's called FireFox."

Noob: "WTF?!"

I think we (the Linux community) get too caught up in our own bureaucracy sometimes.

I was just reading this article about the subject on Linxu.com and finally came across this sentence regarding the MozillaDebian agreement back in 2004:

"Eventually an agreement was struck whereby we could use the name without the logo and it was up to the Mozilla Foundation to keep an eye on the Debian packages to make sure they met the level of quality they expected," said Dorland. "Now the trademark has been moved to the Mozilla Corp. and they feel that agreement isn't strong enough."

Is it just me, or does this sound backwards to you? It was Mozilla's responsibility to babysit the Debian developers and monitor what they're doing? You telling me that Mozilla is supposed to watchdog all the Linux distro developers to make sure quality is met? Or is it just the Debian people that need to be watched?

I'd think it would be up to Debian to make sure Debian met Mozilla standards, wouldn't you agree?

Steven Vaughan-Nichols blasts Debian and the Firefox fork. I agree with this guy 100%. He nails it completely.
